Australian Breast Cancer Statistics 2023

On average, 57 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer each and every day.

Women:

  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst women in Australia.

  • It is estimated that breast cancer will account for approximately 28 per cent of all new cancers in Australian women

  • The risk of a woman being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime is 1 in 7.

  • Approximately 80 per cent of new cases of breast cancer are in women aged 50 or above.

  • Around 1,000 young women aged 40 and younger are diagnosed with breast cancer each year – that’s 3 young women every day!

  • Breast cancer is estimated to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women aged 20 - 39 years.

Men:

  • About 1 in 542 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
